Maps, charts and globes for Year 4 at the PPMMCC

Year 4 visited the Prince Philip Maritime Museum Collections Centre on Tuesday, to learn about maps, charts and globes.

This is the storage and conservation facility for the National Maritime Museum and is a state-of-the-art facility containing well over a million artefacts.

We looked at a 600-year-old vellum chart, a 400-year-old globe and the first GPS box before making our own globes, using oranges, which we peeled to turn into maps.

In the afternoon, we tried making our own globes, using gores (card strips), which was trickier than it looks!
