How do you change the pitch of a sound?

Mor investigating with musical instruments this week in LKS2 Science.

This time we were looking at pitch – high and low sounds. We started off by finding out what happens when you wrap an elastic band around a wooden block, put a pencil underneath it and pluck the elastic band. We moved the pencil and watched and listened to what happened.

We then experimented with different instruments- xylophones, ukuleles, drums and recorders.

We noticed that when the string was longer, the vibrations were fewer and the sound lower. We discovered that hitting the drum around the edge gave a higher-pitched sound and in the middle a lower-pitched sound. When using the elastic band, the longer side made a lower sound.
