For science week in year 2 we have been focusing on the vital role that earthworms play in ensuring we all have enough food to eat. Year 2 found out that there are 27 species of earthworm in the UK! They keep soil alive by forming tunnels to bring oxygen and moisture to the soil and releasing carbon-dioxide. Worm waste also provides rich nutrients for the crops we grow. We found some friendly worms in St Margaret’s soil and we were all fascinated to observe them very closely. No worms were harmed in the process and were all returned home safely.
