Society in Ancient Civilisations – LKS2

Years 3 & 4 have begun their learning about Ancient Civilisations, with a focus on the Shang Dynasty of Ancient China.

We have looked at location and settlement and then moved on to look at the hierarchical structure of their society.

We found lots of similarities with Ancient Egyptian society and also compared the Shang Dynasty with the Indus Valley civilisation (in modern-day Pakistan) and that of Ancient Sumer (located in modern-day Iraq).

We found that they all had a similar pyramid shape with one ruler at the top and many peasants and slaves at the bottom.

We tested out what it felt like – being a slave was pretty hard work, being a king very precarious and wobbly and being somewhere in the middle was pretty satisfactory!

It feels good to be at the top but not very secure!
