What if someone finds it difficult showing empathy?

This term, we’ve spent some time learning about empathy and why it’s important. But what if someone finds it really difficult to show empathy?

Children across KS2 are learning about autism and how people who are autistic are all unique, with characteristics and behaviours that span a spectrum.

We looked at the light spectrum to try and understand this concept. We looked at the fact that some colours are ‘unseen’ (infrared & ultraviolet) in the same way that the characteristics of people with autism may also be ‘unseen’. We watched a video that introduced the children to some characteristic traits that may be common to people with autism – one of which can be difficulty understanding emotions and expressing empathy.
