Mummifying tomatoes in LKS2 🍅

LKS2 combined their History and Science work this afternoon by mummifying tomatoes in order to learn more about the states of matter.

We focused on our observation and measuring skills by photographing and describing our tomatoes before, during and after the process and by using digital scales to measure out our salt, which we used to make our natron (preserving mixture).

We predicted that the salt and bicarbonate of soda mixture (natron) will dry out the tomatoes, changing some of the liquid into a solid.

We also predicted that our control tomato, which had nothing done to it, may well produce some gas as it begins to decay…
